Green tea does not break a fast. Unsweetened green tea is essentially calorie-free, does not raise insulin, and may gently support fat burning and focus during a fast.
| Calories | ~0-2 kcal per cup |
|---|---|
| Breaks a weight-loss fast? | No |
| Breaks ketosis? | No |
| Breaks autophagy? | No |
| Insulin impact | Negligible |
Plain brewed green tea contains almost no calories and no sugar, so it does not trigger the insulin response that ends a fast. Its catechins, especially EGCG, are associated with modest increases in fat oxidation, and its caffeine helps with appetite and focus during a fasting window.
The tea itself is fine; sweetened, bottled, or honey-added versions are not. Many ready-to-drink green teas contain sugar and will break a fast. Stick to plain brewed or unsweetened tea, hot or iced.
Two to four cups across the day is comfortable for most people. Because green tea contains caffeine, avoid it late in the day so it does not interfere with sleep.
