It depends on which Liquid I.V. you use. The classic Hydration Multiplier has 11 g of sugar and about 45 calories per stick, enough to break a fast. The Sugar-Free sticks have 0 g of sugar and about 15 to 20 calories from allulose, which most people can use while fasting.
| Calories | ~45 kcal (classic), ~15-20 kcal (sugar-free) |
|---|---|
| Breaks a weight-loss fast? | Partial |
| Breaks ketosis? | Partial |
| Breaks autophagy? | Partial |
| Insulin impact | Raised by the classic, minimal for sugar-free |
Liquid I.V. uses sugar to pull sodium and water from the gut into the body faster, the same idea as oral rehydration solutions. That works for rehydration, but 11 g of cane sugar and dextrose raises blood sugar and insulin and ends the fasted state, so the classic stick belongs in your eating window.
Liquid I.V. Sugar-Free replaces the sugar with allulose and stevia. Allulose mostly passes through the body without being used for energy and has a negligible effect on blood sugar and insulin, so the 15 to 20 calories on the label matter little for weight loss or ketosis. On a strict fast for autophagy, plain water with a pinch of salt is the cleaner choice.
One sugar-free stick in 16 oz of water during the fast is enough for most people. Keep the classic sticks for after a workout or for your eating window.
