Most plain dill pickles do not break a fast. Brined in vinegar and salt, they have very few calories, and the brine can even help replace electrolytes. Sweet pickles are the exception.

| Breaks ketosis? | No |
| Breaks autophagy? | No |

A plain dill pickle spear has only a few calories and almost no sugar. The salty, vinegary brine provides sodium that can ease fasting fatigue. In the small amounts people eat, plain dill pickles have a negligible effect on insulin and do not meaningfully break a fast.
Bread-and-butter and other sweet pickles are packed with added sugar and will break a fast. The verdict depends entirely on the type: choose plain dill, not sweet, and keep portions small.
A spear or two of plain dill pickles is fine during a fast; a full serving starts to add up.
